What is the difference between club sports, intramural sports, and varsity sports?

All NYU Club Sports are formed, operated, and governed by students who compete or perform against other sports clubs from other Universities, colleges, or nearby organizations, or perform in various competitions related to the club's purpose. Intramurals are programs (leagues, tournaments, and events) that are structured for students to compete and participate with one another at various levels.

Club Sports have dedicated practice times, competition schedules, club commitments, and much longer seasons than intramural programming.

Varsity sports are intercollegiate and governed under the NCAA. Varsity sports require a strict commitment and engagement as well as skill level.

What is a club sport?

At NYU, Club Sports are officially recognized organizations operated and guided by students (with support from head coaches and Campus Recreation) who operate within a purpose outlined in their club constitution for competitive or recreational purposes.

Club Sports can meet multiple times a week, compete against other universities and colleges, and have varied commitments to possible travel, fundraising, and individual monetary contributions (internal club dues).

How do I join a Club Sport?

In order to join a club sport, you must go through the registration process which may include proof of a recent physical performed by a physician, and other required documentation.

Please see the registration process HERE for the sport or activity of your interest.

Can I join more than one club?

Absolutely! Many students participate in multiple clubs, especially those that do not have conflicting regular seasons. As long as you are able to maintain the required commitment for each club, you are welcomed to join and participate in multiple club sports.

Are the clubs Competitive, Recreational, or Instructional? Do you need prior competitive experience to join a club?

The club experience and competitive level varies depending on the club of your interest.Several of our clubs require tryouts and previous experience (e.g.Ice Hockey and Figure Skating), a few require coaching acceptance (e.g. Equestrian and Rowing) but many of our clubs have pathways for beginners to learn and develop within the sport or activity. We recommend connecting with the club leadership or reviewing their constitution for further insight for club membership requirements.

What is the cost to participate in a club sport?

It varies depending on the club. Clubs range in regards to required equipment needs as well as internal dues.We recommend connecting with the club leadership or reviewing their constitution for further insight for club membership requirements.

Do I need a medical clearance to participate in Club Sports?

Medical clearance is required for the following clubs: Cheerleading (Competitive and Spirit Squad), Climbing Cycling, Dance, Equestrian, Figure Skating, Flag Football, Ice Hockey, Judo, LAX, Rowing, Running, Sport Taekwondo, Ultimate Frisbee, Women's Soccer, and Water Polo.

What medical clearance is accepted?

Physicals can be conducted at the NYU Student Health Center, the student's personal physician, or an Urgent Care Facility (e.g. CityMD). Physicals conducted with your primary care physician or from an Urgent Care Facility must utilize the NYU Athletics Club Sport Pre-Participation Physical Form. Physicals from Urgent Care Facilities must be signed by a physician. Documents signed by physician assistants or administrative personnel will not be accepted.

Physicals conducted at the NYU Student Health Center DO NOT require the NYU Athletics Club Sport Pre-Participation Physical Form - you can upload the standard form completed by the NYU Student Health Center.

Doctors who are related to the individual cannot sign off on the physical.

When can I register for Club Sports?

Fall registration usually opens on August 1st and Spring registration on January 1st.

I uploaded all the necessary documents. Why is my registration still pending?

Registrations that require a physical are reviewed by various constituents to ensure your safety. Please be patient as your registration goes through the process. You can always contact as at campusrec@nyu.edu as a follow up.

What is the time commitment?

Our clubs range from one meeting per week to three times per week. Depending on the club's activity, mission, and competition/performance schedule, time commitment can vary.

Is there any travel involved?

Yes. Depending on the club's mission, there is travel involved. Especially if the club is a heavily competitive group. We recommend reviewing the club's constitution and connecting with the leadership for the club of your interest.

Where do the clubs practice?

Our NYU Clubs practice all over NYC depending on their need for space (i.e. field needs) and type of facility. From our own NYU Athletic facilities and various parks and fields within NYC, to activity-specific facilities within the tri-state area, NYU Clubs have various homes across the city and area that diversifies the experience.

Please check the club's team page or contact the club's leadership for information.

The sport I am interested in playing isn't listed. Is it possible to start a new club?

Yes! We welcome the opportunity to start NEW clubs. In order to start new clubs, please see HERE on how to do so.

All new clubs must send a formal proposal and present to Campus Recreation in order to be considered for club status. Club acceptance is based on Campus Recreation's ability to reasonably suport the club's mission, not solely on interest.

How many teams can I play on?

You are allowed to play on only one team per sport/event. Exceptions will be made for participants playing on a men's team or women's team as well as on a Co-Rec team in the same sport.

What is the competitiveness of the leagues, events, etc…?

The experience level of the participants typically range from newbie to experienced player - with most falling somewhere in the middle. All of our events and leagues are inclusive to ALL, and highly recommended if you are looking to pick up a new activity.

All of our leagues are open - no gender restrictions or requirements. Please come as you are.

What is the level of experience in Intramurals?

The range of experience in any given sport or activity can range from former semi-pro or Division I athlete to an individual picking up the sport for the very first time. The majority of participants fall somewhere in between. Do not be intimidated or disappointed by this! Some leagues offer different divisions for those looking for either competitive or recreational play. And most importantly, the atmosphere and vibe for most intramural games are super supportive and welcoming.

Is there a dress code?

Yes! All intramural participants are required to wear sports/athletic/fitness attire, which includes non-marking sneakers and shorts or sweatpants in competition. No jewelry, hats, scarfs, jackets, or boating shoes are allowed. Please review the Intramural manual for further details.

I don't have a team, can I still participate in Intramurals?

Absolutely! Students who do not have teams are considered "free agents". All free agents can find and join teams who are looking for additional players on the IMLeages platform, or will be placed on a random team looking for additional players before league play begins.

We take pride in our free agent process and placing others on teams that they will have a great experience. It's a great and exciting way to meet new people here at NYU!

If you have any questions about registering as an individual aka "free agent", please contact us at nyuintramurals@nyu.edu.

Do I need equipment?

Most sports and/or activities will have equipment provided. However, certain sports, like softball (e.g. gloves/mitts) or tennis (e.g. rackets), will require you to bring your own equipment.

How do I find out when my team is playing?

All scheduled game times, standings, and core information can be seen on the IMLeagues platform. Schedules are posted in advance. Reschedules will be communicated with teams and participants as they occur.

What is the level of commitment for NYU Intramurals?

We expect you to devote your entire being to NYU Intramurals. We're kidding!

You or your team will be scheduled once a week in any given sport or activity (twice for those who request it), and games/engagements are usually about one hour. Our schedules are very flexible as we value Intramurals being a part of your student experience, wellness and development, NOT the entire thing.

Sports aren't really my thing. Are there any other ways to stay active through NYU Intramurals?

Absolutely! Besides our traditional sports, we offer an array of programs such as fitness competitions, fantasy sports, board games, as well asother popular events thatoffer programs, outlets, and communities for those who prefer their physical activity in other ways away from the courts and fields.
