Fyang Smith, who was raised by her mother and grandmother, is dedicated to making them proud as a way of expressing her gratitude toward them. Even though her Lola Roberta died when she was only 11, Smith hopes that the former is smiling down at her from heaven.

“Sana ‘yung lola ko, who is in heaven, and mommy ko, proud sila sa’kin (I hope my lola in heaven and mommy are proud of me),” she said during the “Picnic” Filipino dub media con in Quezon City when asked about unforgettable memories with her mom.

The “Pinoy Big Brother: Gen 11” winner shared that she was raised by her Lola Roberta since she was a child, as her mother worked as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) for quite some time. Smith’s mother eventually made up for the lost time while she was growing up.

“‘Yung mommy ko, kung paano siya mag-care sa’kin, she’s super protective pero hindi naman to the point na super daming bawal. She lets me enjoy my teenage life. She is very protective, malambing, and if alam niyang mali ang isang [bagay] na gagawin ko, talagang pipigilan niya ko,” she added.

Without delving too deeply into her childhood, Smith admitted that she had been a naughty grandchild, and hoped that her lola would see how much she has grown.

“Aminado po ako na super makulit ako [habang kasama] lola ko, gusto kong lagi akong nasa labas para maglaro ng kung ano-ano,” she said. “[Kaya] nag-promise ako sa mommy and lola ko that I will make them proud of me,” she said.

“But my lola died when I was 11. Sana ‘yung lola ko in heaven, proud siya sa’kin. Sana proud ang mom ko sa lahat ng ginagawa ko. Lahat naman ng ginagawa ko ay para sa kanya,” she continued.

(I’m aware that I’ve been naughty when my lola was there. I always wanted to go out and play. This is why I promised my mommy and Lola that I will make them proud of me. But my lola died when I was 11. I hope my lola in heaven is proud of me. I hope my mom is proud of me. I’m doing these things because of them.)

Smith is one of the actors selected to do the Filipino dubbing of the Korean film “Picnic,” which stars screen veterans Kim Young-ok, Na Moon-hee, and Park Geun-hyung. In the film, the rising star was chosen to dub the voice of the young Go Eun-sim (Na Moon-hee).

Since the film centers on elderly mothers and their relationship with their children, and handling death, Smith said working on the dubbing that love comes in different forms.

“Marami sa’tin ang naka-experience nang hindi nakakatanggap ng pagmamahal sa magulang. So, after watching this movie, marerealize mo na hindi lang sa pamilya mo makukuha ang tunay na pagmamahal. Mararamdaman mo siya sa best friend and mga tunay na kaibigan,” she said.

(A lot of us experienced the feeling of not being able to receive love from their parents. So, after watching this movie, I hope you will realize that you can also feel real love from your best friend and other true friends, not just from your family.)

Also part of the Filipino dub’s cast are Nova Villa, Ces Quesada, Bodjie Pascua, and JM Ibarra.
