John Wooden Center | Recreation (2024)

The John Wooden Center is available to registered UCLA students, faculty, staff, retirees, alumni, and community members. Registered students can use your bruin card for access. All other affiliations, please register for a Rec membership.

Updated Policies and Procedures

Access and Age Restrictions

  • Only UCLA Recreation Personal Fitness Trainers may conduct training sessions in any UCLA Recreation facility.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age to use the cardio and strength areas, unless otherwise determined by instructor-led activity or program.
  • Youth open recreation is currently not available.
  • Courtyard will be closed in inclement weather, unsafe conditions and for scheduled classes.

  1. Report any blood, injury, equipment malfunction or facility feedback to the FITWELL staff immediately.
  2. For help or questions, including guidance and lifting instruction, see FITWELL staff.
  3. For special accommodations, see FITWELL staff.

Participant Policies

  • A top, bottom and shoes are required, unless otherwise determined by instructor-led activity or program.
  • Closed toed/closed heel athletic shoes are required.
  • Clothing with buttons, zippers and studs is prohibited on upholstered equipment or any cardio seat.
  • Clothing or towel must provide a barrier between skin (except hands), upholstery and mats.
  • Towels are highly recommended.
  • Backpacks and bags are not allowed on the floor, except in the Cardio Zones. Personal belongings should be secured in a locker.
  • Do not hang any item on cardio equipment.
  • Beverages must be in a spill-proof, unbreakable, re-sealable container. No spitting.
  • Maintain personal hygiene as to not be disruptive to the environment.
  • No strongly scented deodorants, perfumes or colognes.
  • All audio must be confined to a personal listening device.
  • Be respectful of all equipment, patrons and staff.
  • Follow posted zone-specific policies and all staff directions.

Equipment:

  • Dumbbells, plates, and bars should not be dropped from any height.
  • Collars must be used on all bars when weight is added.
  • Do not lean bars or throw balls against walls, windows or ceilings. No contact with windows during any activity.
  • Do not stand bars or dumbbells vertically on floor.
  • Rerack dumbbells, barbells, plates and all other equipment to designated storage locations after each use.
  • Spotters are recommended for all free weight exercises performed over the head, face, and chest.
  • Maintain a safe distance between users.
  • Equipment must be used as intended. Modifications are NOT allowed.
  • All free-standing movements must be performed in designated area.
  • Wipe off equipment after each use.
  • 30-minute time limit (including warm up and cool down) on all cardio equipment when others are waiting.

      Functional Training Zone

      Equipment For Each User:

      • Squat Racks

      Courtyard

      Courtyard is available to all participants within a reservation time. Masks are recommended but not required in this outdoor space.

      Courtyard may be unavailable due to programming and inclement weather

      Multipurpose gymnasium for a variety of fitness activities including:

      *Available during classes only

      Pardee Gym may be unavailable for fitness open recreation due to programming and sport reservations.

      Collins Court

      Collins Courts is an indoor basketball gymnasium including 3 full sized basketball courts.

      Locker Rooms & Saunas

      Men and Women Locker Rooms are available for use in the John Wooden Center.

      Locker Rooms are equipped with showers, day-use lockers, quarterly locker rentals, restrooms, and saunas.

      UCLA registered clubs and organizations as well as departments can reserve one of the following meeting rooms inside the John Wooden Center:

      BruinHub

      The BruinHub is a new space designed to meet the needs of students who commute long distances to campus as well as those who experience some form of housing insecurity, located at the John Wooden Center. The space was designed in recognition of commuters' routines and needs. To use the space, students are invited to fill out an online application to become a “BruinHub Passholder.”

      Bike Shop

      The UCLA Bike Shop is a Do-It-Yourself Workshop established as a partnership between UCLA Recreation and UCLA Transportation to encourage transportation by bicycle. We provide tools, a workspace, and resources for UCLA students and staff to make their own repairs.

      Rock Wall

      The Rock Wall is located on the first floor of the John Wooden Center (JWC). All members of UCLA Recreation are eligible to come climb at the Rock Wall. The Rock Wall is a set up for bouldering only.

      Open Recreation hours will be honored during business hours. JWC offers options for volleyball, table tennis, badminton, racquetball, squash, and basketball.

      Location

      The John Wooden Center sits atop Parking Structure 4 on Westwood Plaza just south of Sunset Boulevard. It is in the heart of campus, at the intersection of Bruin Walk and Westwood Plaza, alongside the Intramural Field, Pauley Pavilion, the JD Morgan Center, Ackerman Union, and the Student Activities Center.
