Private banks, like luxury watchmakers and supercar manufacturers, face the challenge of building scalability to ensure their businesses are profitable while maintaining an air of exclusivity.
That balancing act has come to the fore this year as banks have overhauled their discretionary portfolio management (DPM) propositions, against a backdrop of cost-cutting and tough markets.
A number have adopted a more standardised approach to core investments and opened up these propositions to smaller clients in a bid to pull in more assets, while trying to maintain a high bar for bespoke mandates.
