Welke updates en upgrades krijg je, als je nu de Samsung Galaxy S23 koopt? Hoe lang worden de toestellen in de serie ondersteund, de komende jaren?

Galaxy S23 updates en upgrades

Samsung heeft de nieuwe topmodellen in de Galaxy S23 serie officieel gelanceerd. Sterker nog: je kunt nu al direct de beste Galaxy S23 (pre-order) aanbiedingen uitzoeken, en het toestel van jouw keuze bestellen. Maar als je er nu een bestelt, hoeveel en hoe vaak krijgt jouw nieuwe telefoon de laatste software-updates en upgrades?

Om deze vraag goed te kunnen beantwoorden, moet je weten wat voor soort updates de Galaxy S23 gaat krijgen. In feite zijn dat er drie: Android upgrades, One UI upgrades, en beveiligingsupdates. Laten we met de eerste beginnen.

Galaxy S23: hoeveel Android upgrades?

Android is het besturingssysteem waarop de Galaxy S23 draait. Voor dit systeem verschijnt in de regel een keer per jaar een nieuwe versie. Bij de lancering liet Samsung gelijk weten dat de toestellen vier grote Android upgrades gaan krijgen.

De S23, S23+, en Galaxy S23 Ultra worden nu uitgebracht met Android 13. De komende jaren kun je dus upgrades verwachten naar:

One UI upgrades

Hoewel de Galaxy S23 op het Android besturingssysteem draait, is het interface waarmee je ‘m bedient van Samsung zelf. Deze heet One UI, en wordt ook bijgewerkt met nieuwe features en opties. Upgrades voor de One UI interface zijn niet altijd netjes genummerd. Soms verschijnen nieuwe functies ‘gewoon zo'.

Echter, een aantal vaste One UI updates verschijnen wel met een zekere regelmaat. Zo verschijnen grote versie-upgrades altijd tegelijk met de Android upgrade van dat jaar. Daarnaast verschijnt een nieuwe Galaxy S-telefoon – zoals de Galaxy S23 – doorgaans ook met nieuwe features, die dan weer naar oudere toestellen komen met een kleinere One UI versie-upgrade.

De Galaxy S23 serie verschijnt nu met One UI 5.1. De komende jaren verwachten wij upgrades naar:

One UI 6 (eind 2023, tegelijk met Android 14)
One UI 6.1 (begin 2024)
One UI 7 (eind 2024, tegelijk met Android 15)
One UI 7.1 (begin 2025)
One UI 8 (eind 2025, tegelijk met Android 16)
One UI 8.1 (begin 2026)
One UI 9 (eind 2026, begin 2027, tegelijk met Android 17)
One UI 9.1 (begin 2027)

Maar let op: deze upgrades liggen uiteindelijk minder vast dan die van het Android OS. De kans is groter dat Samsung hier in de komende jaren nog versies tussenvoegt of juist weglaat. Wel kun je ervanuit gaan dat de One UI interface ongeveer even lang courant blijft als het Android systeem op de Galaxy S23 serie. Dat is dan ook wat het bovenstaande lijstje weerspiegelt.

Beveiligingsupdates: hoe vaak en hoe lang?

Het gros van de updates die je op jouw Galaxy S23 ontvangt is echter kleiner, en verschijnt veel vaker. We hebben het dan natuurlijk over de beveiligingsupdates. Deze brengen geen nieuwe functies naar de telefoon. Wel installeren ze de zogeheten ‘patches' die Google iedere maand uitbrengt voor het Android systeem. En ze bevatten verbeteringen voor de beveiliging van Samsung's eigen apps en One UI interface. Bovendien bevatten ze soms ook oplossingen voor bugs.

De toestellen in de Galaxy S23 serie krijgen deze beveiligingsupdates iedere maand. Dat is ook het tempo waarin Google de patches uitbrengt. De S23 krijgt dus iedere patch apart – tenminste, de eerste jaren. Tot nu toe krijgen Samsung's toptoestellen deze updates drie jaar lang iedere maand. De afgelopen jaren switchte Samsung na drie jaar altijd om naar een updateschema per kwartaal. Je krijgt dan iedere drie maanden verschillende patches tegelijk.

Concreet belooft Samsung dus beveiligingsupdates tot februari 2028:

Samenvattend

Daarmee heb je nu dus een vrij compleet beeld van wat je kunt verwachten als je nu een van de Samsung Galaxy S23 modellen aanschaft. In feite kan Samsung het ondersteuningsbeleid de komende jaren nog aanpasssen. Maar de belofte van vier Android upgrades en vijf jaar beveiligingsupdates staat. Daarvan kan het bedrijf dus niet in negatieve zin afwijken – maar verbeteren of verlengen mag wel.
