What is the max draw weight for Mathews VXR? ›

Plus, at 326.7 fps., it was plenty fast. During the objective testing at Stress Engineering, we found the Mathews VXR to have an efficiency score of 82.5 percent. Compound bows for hunting don't get much better. The Mathews VXR 28 is a 28-inch axle-to-axle compound with a 6-inch brace height, and it weighs 4.44 pounds.

How do I adjust draw weight on VXR? Insert the Allen wrench into one of the limb bolts on the bow. Turn the limb bolt clockwise to increase the draw weight or counterclockwise to decrease the draw weight. One rotation of the bolt increases or decreases the draw weight by about two to four pounds.

Draw Weight Choices

Ideally, bows used for hunting deer should have a draw weight of at least 40lbs, at a peak draw of 28 inches. In Olympic archery, competitors use recurve bows with a mechanical sight that draw an average of around 48.5 pounds for the men and 33 pounds for the women.

Now, as you might already expect, a higher draw weight will almost always result in more arrow speed- but, before you go shooting your arrows out of a bow twice as heavy as your own- remember to keep arrow weight consistent.

Turn the limb bolt clockwise to increase the draw weight and counter clockwise to decrease the weight. Both limb bolts must be adjusted equally, or the bow may become out of tune/synchronization. The limb bolt should be snug. Do not over-tighten.

How many pounds should I set my bow to? ›

For whitetail deer hunting anything above 40 lbs is fine. For larger game such as elk or moose a good recommendation is at least 60-65 lbs of draw weight. A general rule of thumb is that a shooter should be able to shoot a bow about 30 times in a row without being fatigued.

In general, a good arrow speed for deer hunting is between 250 and 300 feet per second pending your TAW. This range of velocity with the correct arrow provides more than enough kinetic energy and momentum to effectively take down a deer while also maintaining accuracy at typical hunting distances.

The IBO speed for the shorter model is up to 348 FPS with a 6” brace height. The 33” version has an IBO speed rating that hits up to 343 FPS with a 6.5” brace height. The LIFT 29.5” is available in 24.5” to 30” draw lengths. The LIFT 33” is available in 25” to 31.5” draw lengths in half-inch increments.

The maximum draw weight of a crossbow can vary considerably, with some models exceeding 200 pounds.

Specifically, a compound bow with a variable peak weight range above 60lb cannot be used. For other bows, the maximum draw weight, as measured at the archer's draw length, cannot exceed 60lbs.

If you're new to archery, it's best to start with a bow that has a lower draw weight, such as 20-30 pounds. As you gain experience and strength, you can gradually increase the draw weight. For experienced archers, a draw weight of 40-50 pounds is a good starting point.
